OVERVIEW
The Torch Theatre presented me with an exciting challenge: to design a movie poster, breathe new life into the iconic 1927 film 'Metropolis' movie poster and make it resonate with a modern audience. My mission encompassed every aspect of the design process, from the intricate artwork production to the selection of typefaces and the meticulous layout design. My vision was to infuse the poster with an enigmatic, dystopian, and futuristic aura. My concept revolved around creating a sense of mystery and futurism while embracing the dark and vivid essence of the original film and its original poster. To achieve this, I adopted a somewhat macabre approach by cutting and transforming a mannequin into a robotic figure, where the camera lens metaphorically embodies today's digital society, seamlessly integrated with bold typography. The end goal was to give this theatre poster a contemporary edge, making it relevant and captivating for today's audience, all while paying homage to the legacy of the original film.
Through experimentation involving detailed carving and the infusion of modern elements like a camera lens, silver wires, and speaker cone and basket, I attempted remaking the classic female robot Maria from the German sci-fi movie with a contemporary touch.
